Eriksson Scholarship
York Twinning Association awards scholarships to students who participate in the German and French exchange programs. The scholarship is named after a French teacher in the School District of the City of York, Marguerite Eriksson, who worked in harmony with another YTA founder, Dr. Victoria Lyles, to solidify the twinning project and perpetuate its form and function. She lectured and wrote at length regarding the elementary bilingual curriculum. She authored a college textbook on teaching French in the elementary grades, and she facilitated and monitored the exchange of teachers for fourteen years as well as the student pen-pal program and the summer student exchange program.
In 1973 Miss Eriksson was selected for membership in the National Register of Prominent Americans and International Notables for outstanding achievements in her profession and community. |
In 1977 she was named an honorary citizen of Arles, France, an honor bestowed only on one other person – Pablo Picasso.
Miss Eriksson was tragically killed on a visit to Arles In May 1984. The city has fondly named a park, Place Marguerite Eriksson, in her memory. Fittingly, York Twinning honors her achievements by awarding a scholarship in her name
