Eighteen German adults and 3 children from Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany arrived in York on August 29th to meet their YTA host families and begin a week filled with adventures.
The morning of August 30th, the group met at York’s Colonial Courthouse. They learned about York’s role in US history, met Mayor Helfrich, and were each given a tote bag donated by Explore York. This was followed by a guided tour of the Gates House and Plow Tavern, and a self-guided tour of the new, York History Center. The remainder of the day was spent with host families.
Saturday, August 31st, the group traveled by bus to Hillwood Mansion located outside of Washington, DC. After a delicious lunch the group was transported to the mall area to walk around, explore the Native American Museum and other places of interest.
Sunday, September 1st the group met at Boordy Winery in Hydes, Maryland for a winery tour and picnic. During the tour they learned how grapes are harvested and processed, then tasted samples of great wine while sharing charcuterie snacks provided by YTA members.
Labor Day Monday was a day to relax and spend time with host families.
Tuesday, September 2nd the group went to Gettysburg and toured the new Beyond the Battle Museum providing interactive experiences and filled with artifacts telling the story of the people who lived in Gettysburg during the Civil War. After a picnic lunch, there was time to explore the battlefields before heading to the Eisenhower National Historic Site. The group was fortunate to have a Park Ranger open the home for our group to take a self-guided tour and see where the 34th President of the United States, Dwight David Eisenhower, met with world leaders and where he and his wife Mamie lived when they left the White House in 1961.
September 4th was a busy day. The group went to Indian Steps museum in Airville, PA. After a tour of the museum, the group joined in fun dances performed by Native American Dancers from the Piscataway Nation. It was a great experience for YTA members and our German guests. A farewell pasta bar dinner was held that evening for our German guests their host families, and other friends including Mayor Michael Helfrich. YTA members, Jack Grim and Kyle Groft were our chefs for the evening.
Thursday morning, September 5th, we said goodbye to our German friends as they departed for Philadelphia to catch a plane back to Germany. A big thank you to everyone who hosted, arranged excursions, and participated in events. It was a wonderful whirlwind week filled with memories that will last a lifetime.
