2024 German Student Exchange
York Twinning Association (YTA) participated in a German student exchange with Leinfelden-Echterdingen (LE), German in Summer 2024. York students had a fantastic time and hosted German students when they visited York from October 11 - 26, 2024.
Sixteen students and two adult chaperones from Leinfelden-Echterdingen (LE), Germany were welcomed to the USA by YTA Co-Presidents Doug & Betty Stein upon arrival at Dulles airport then transported by bus to a meeting place in Spring Grove. Host families were excited to greet them and start two weeks of adventures together. Weekends were spent with host families who took them on a variety of adventures. Throughout the weekdays, YTA members kept the German group busy by taking them to visit many places including Hershey Chocolate World, shopping at Hershey Outlets, Indian Echo Caverns, Gettysburg, and the Lancaster Amish Farmhouse.
The group picnicked at Lititz Park then learned how to make pretzels at the Sturgis Pretzel factory. Grant money from Hanover Sam’s Club and York Walmart allowed the group to take a bus trip to Washington, D.C. The group took a walking tour of York stopping at York’s Colonial Court House, the Gates and Plow Tavern, the York History Center, and lunched at Central Market. They made soap at Sunrise Soap, visited Mayor Helfrich at City Hall, and also took photos of murals in Royal Square.
A big thank you to Explore York for donating beautiful canvas bags to our visitors! Students and chaperones spent one morning shadowing students and professors at York College, For a fun break after visiting York College the group spent the afternoon bowling and playing laser tag at Laser Alleys.
One day the group toured the Capitol building and the PA State Museum in Harrisburg. The students spent three days attending high school with their host ‘brothers and sisters’ while chaperones shadowed Spring Grove and South Western High School German teachers.
Along with their host families the German visitors attended a YTA meeting. Presentations were made by both the York French students and the York German students who traveled on YTA exchanges during the summer.
Host families, our German visitors, and some new friends enjoyed a evening together for our farewell dinner. The students also experienced a high school football game between SG and SW. There were long hugs and some tears when it was time to say farewell. We will all cherish timeless memories and lasting friendships.
